5 Things to Keep Your Family Safe When Tornado Hits

Do you know that about 1,075 tornadoes hit the US in 2020 alone?

Tornadoes are violently swirling columns of air that initially start as thunderstorms to crash on the ground fiercely. Their intense winds can annihilate buildings, flip vehicles, and produce deadly flying debris.

In this blog, we’ve compiled a list of things that can keep you and your family safe when a tornado hits!

1. Prepare an Emergency Kit

An emergency kit, also known as a survival kit, is a collection of essential tools and supplies to aid you in emergencies. Here are some items that you should keep in your emergency kit after a tornado watch.

  • Dried or canned food. Keep non-perishable food items that you can consume without cooking, like crackers or tuna. Include baby food or formula supplements if there is a toddler with you;
  • Water bottles;
  • Battery-supported radio;
  • Medicines;
  • First aid kit; and
  • Torches and flashlights.

2. Buy a Fire-Proof Safe Deposit Box

When there is a tornado warning, the home is at the highest risk of destruction. Therefore, consider storing your essential documents and important papers in a fire-proof safe.

If you have to evacuate, don’t leave the documents at home. Carry them in a bag pack to the shelter. For superior protection, keep the deposit box in your basement or any other interior room. If there is an underground shelter in your home, secure the box there!

3. Install Impact-Resistant Windows

Do you know that shattered windows are a leading cause of injuries during a tornado? Don’t worry; you’ve got two ways to secure your home windows.

If you’re constructing a new home or remodeling it, install impact-resistant windows. If this isn’t an option, install hurricane shutters. They enhance your window defense and prevent the blowing debris and stones from breaking them.

4. Bracing Products for Garage Doors

Another vulnerability that poses safety threats to you and your family during a tornado hit is your garage gate! Installing bracing products on the garage door helps enhance the door’s strength and wind resistance.

5. Buy Storm Shelters

Finally, if your home is located in a tornado-prone area like Oklahoma City or Norman, we recommend installing storm shelters. They’re the cost-effective alternative to window shutters and garage door bracers. We provide a wide variety of manufactured and tested storm shelters.

If you have ample space in your backyard or garage, concrete storm shelters are the ultimate option to protect you and your family. If your garage isn’t spacious, consider installing underground garage shelters. They’re FEMA certified. We also provide the installation of safe steel rooms.
