Essential Items To Stock In Your Storm Shelter

If you live in a tornado region, adding storm safe shelters in your homes is extremely important. It will keep you and your family safe from strong winds and flying debris. It’s also important to keep your storm shelters fully stocked for emergencies.

Sometimes bad weather can last for days. To be prepared in such cases, you need to have all the essentials in your storm shelter. Emergency supplies should be enough to last you and your family for a few days.

Here we have made a list of supplies you should keep in your storm shelters for emergencies.

1. Water and Food

There should be an ample amount of food and water to last your family for at least five to seven days. You can easily store water for a few months, but for food items, you can choose non-perishable items, including:

  • canned soup
  • canned fish and chicken
  • granola bars
  • trail mix
  • ready to eat meals
  • canned vegetables and fruits
  • baby formula and food
  • pet food
  • peanut butter and crackers
  • seven gallons of water for each person

Also, don’t forget to keep a can opener for your canned food.

2. First Aid Kit

We can’t emphasize the importance of having a fully stocked first aid kit enough. You should have it at all times in your storm shelter. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. You can fill a small bag with the essential medication such as:

  • prescription medicines for every family member
  • compress dressing
  • sterile gauze
  • bandages
  • thermometer
  • tweezer
  • antibiotic ointments
  • antibacterial wipes
  • over-the-counter pain medications

3. Clothing

You might think it’s unimportant, but you should stock your storm shelter with a few clothing items. You never know when you might need clean clothes. Your kids can soil their pants, or someone can get hurt and need a change of clothes because of blood.

You should have clothing items like:

  • heavy boots
  • some warm clothes
  • one set of clothes for each member, while two sets for kids

an incoming tornado

4. Light and Batteries

You should have flashlights, especially if you have kids. If your kids are scared, they would be more reluctant to stay in the storm shelter.

Keep other necessary equipment like batteries, phone charger, and radio.

5. Important Documents

If your house gets directly hit by a tornado, it’s a possibility that you may lose everything, including your important documents. It’s better to move your documents, such as your passport and birth certificate, to the storm shelter.
